Another Gisborne native, Athol has been part of the Riversun team since 1986, when he was employed to supervise two kiwi fruit blocks under Geoff Thorpe’s management. By the early 1990s, as the nursery’s production of grafted grapevines was increasing rapidly, Athol was involved in practically every aspect of the company, from grafting and field ops to dispatch to client liaison. In 1997, he began overseeing the potted vine operation at Matawhero, switching again in 2005 to monitoring for pests, disease and hormone spray damage. Today, he manages both the nursery and quarantine operations.
