Fine French dark-skinned red wine grape: The powerful centre of Bordeaux red blends, this variety also shines in the pure single varietal wines produced in the New World. Thick skins, small berry size and high ratio of pulp to pip lend rich colour and tannins to wines. Susceptible to powdery mildew and wood diseases such as eutypa and excoriose. Vigour often requires control, and can be late to ripen without canopy management.
