Also known as Monastrell and Mataro, Mourvèdre is an important, widely planted variety in Spain. It was very widely planted in Provence before the arrival of Phylloxera, and has made a remarkable comeback since the late 1950s. In good years, can produce very good wines with structure, fruit and perfume. Ripens very late, possibly a week later than Cabernet Sauvignon although bud burst is similar. Important in Australia for GSM blends.
