Known as Pinot Grigio in Italy, Pinot Gris is fast becoming a significant commercial variety for new Zealand. Riversun imports from ENTAV-INRA and Italy are showing higher disease tolerance and more intense flavour profiles than the standard selections traditionally planted for this variety.

Regular production of small berries and bunches with medium to high sugar content.
Good - held up very well to botrytis in 2009.
Good intensity of flavour, capable of producing fine wines.

Appreciated for its viticultural characteristics. Medium to low productivity, small bunches with variable berry size, and tough skins.
Prone to some rot, but more tolerant than current Pinot Gris clones like GM 2-15 and GM 2-16 or Lincoln Berrysmith.
Excellent flavours, capable of producing fine wines.

Small bunches, ranging from some still relatively tight to the majority showing open structure, with more advanced ripeness than other selections, both currently planted clones and French imports. Medium to high sugar content, average crop load, vigorous.
Great resistance to botrytis and other bunch rots.
Spice, pear, tokay, fig, honeysuckle, with bright fresh citrus notes - great flavour intensity, with moderate acidity.
North-eastern Italian Pinot Grigio personally selected for Riversun by the world-famous flying winemaker Alberto Antonini (Matura). Suitable for premium winemaking in a variety of styles. Very distinctive and promising clone. Microvins 07, 08, 09.

This may have been the original Mission clone (although this remains unproven). The PN prefix was given to accessions heat treated at Palmerston North.

Dr Gerald Atkinson in his Bragato workshop stated that this clone originated from MAF in Hastings and was planted by David Jackson at Lincoln University (could be the same as the Barrie clone discovered at Lincoln by the NZGVIG).
