Sangiovese

Italy's most widely planted red wine grape variety. The principal variety in the Super Tuscans, the base for Chianti and the sole grape permitted for Brunello di Montalcino. Wines made solely from Sangiovese can be somewhat hard and acidic. Slow and late ripening, the variety adapts well to several soil types. Rich, alcoholic and intense wines, when yields are controlled. Over production accentuates the wine's acidity and lightens its colour. Susceptible to rot in cool, damp years.
