The most widely grown red-wine grape in Spain, where it is used for both ultra-premium and commercial wines, depending on crop levels (known as 'Aragonez' in Portugal). Wines age well and are low in acid; however, Tempranillo lacks identifiable fruit flavours and is consequently often used for blending. Bud burst generally first week after Chardonnay; fruit ripens early, slightly earlier than Merlot and as much as 2 weeks earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon.
Budburst - Midseason , Harvest - Early
