Vernaccia

Common Italian white variety (the name comes from the same root as that for 'vernacular' or 'common') cultivated from the extreme north all the way down to Sardinia, where it produces an almost sherry-like wine. The most highly regarded expression of the variety is from Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Wines have an almost varnishy but crisp full-bodied quality. Barrel ageing can add interest.
