Zinfandel
Exotic black-skinned grape grown predominantly in California, where it occupies much the same place as Shiraz in Australia. Shares similarities with Primitivo; however, the vine structure differs somewhat. Bunches can ripen unevenly and once full ripeness is achieved, fruit can turn quickly to raisins. Performs best in warm but not hot conditions and high-altitude vineyards can work particularly well. Best suited to dry, sturdy, unsubtle but vigourous reds.
